ὀθόν-ιον G3608
Linen cloth, linen wrapping; strips of linen used especially for burial, the cloths that wrapped Jesus' body.
A diminutive of ὀθόνη (linen), referring to strips or pieces of linen cloth. All five NT occurrences relate directly to Jesus' burial and resurrection. In John 19:40, the body is wrapped in linen cloths with spices according to Jewish custom. The discovery of these same cloths lying in the empty tomb becomes powerful resurrection evidence (Luke 24:12; John 20:5–7). The Spanish 'lienzos' and French 'bandelette' (small bandage-strip) capture the diminutive quality, while German 'Leinentücher' (linen cloths) emphasizes the fabric.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Linen cloths or strips used for wrapping a body for burial. The diminutive form (from ὀθόνη) suggests smaller pieces or strips rather than a single large sheet (which is σινδών). Every NT use connects to Jesus' burial: Joseph and Nicodemus wrap the body in ὀθόνια with aromatic spices (John 19:40), and the discovery of these wrappings lying undisturbed in the empty tomb (Luke 24:12; John 20:5–7) becomes evidence of the resurrection. The French 'bandelette' captures the strip-like quality, while the Spanish 'lienzos' highlights the linen material. 5×
