shave, to cut hair close to the skin with a razor
To shave is to remove hair by cutting close to the skin. Paul advises four men to 'shave their heads' as part of a Nazirite vow purification (Acts 21:24). He argues that if a woman prays with uncovered head, she might as well 'shave her head' (1 Cor 11:5, 6)—a culturally shameful act. The term is literal: hair removal. Spanish uses 'raparse' (shave oneself) and French 'raser,' both straightforward for this grooming/ritual act.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To shave, to cut hair close to the skin, whether for ritual purification or as a sign of shame. Acts 21:24 describes the completion of a Nazirite vow requiring head-shaving. 1 Corinthians 11:5, 6 use shaving as a reductio argument about head covering: if a woman won't cover her head, she might as well embrace the shame of a shaved head. The Greek ξυράω/ξυρέω is the standard term for shaving with a razor. Universally translated as 'shave/raparse/raser' across languages. 3×
