N-GFS  |  2× in 1 sense
nard, a costly aromatic oil derived from the spikenard plant
An expensive perfume extracted from the roots and stems of the nard plant (Nardostachys jatamansi), native to the Himalayas. Both Gospel occurrences describe the anointing of Jesus—by an unnamed woman in Mark 14:3 and by Mary of Bethany in John 12:3. The extravagant gesture (worth a year's wages) provoked criticism but Jesus defended it as prophetic preparation for His burial. The exotic origin and high cost of the oil underscore the worshiper's lavish devotion.

Senses
1. sense 1 The precious ointment of spikenard, valued for its fragrance and rarity. Ancient sources distinguish several varieties (Celtic, Syrian, mountain), but the biblical nard is likely the genuine Indian/Himalayan variety, transported along spice routes at great expense. The Semitic loanword (Babylonian 'lardu') reflects its foreign origin. Cross-linguistic consistency (Spanish 'nardo,' French 'nard,' German 'Narde') preserves the exotic term, matching the Gospel narratives' emphasis on the oil's extraordinary worth.
