N-GNS  |  4× in 1 sense
Manna; the miraculous bread-like food God provided Israel in the wilderness, later a type of heavenly sustenance.
Manna -- from the Hebrew man hu ('What is it?') -- is the mysterious food God rained down daily for Israel's forty wilderness years. In the NT it functions typologically: Jesus contrasts the manna the fathers ate and still died with the true bread from heaven that gives eternal life (John 6:31, 49). Hebrews 9:4 recalls the golden jar of manna stored in the ark of the covenant as a memorial of God's provision. In Rev 2:17 the risen Christ promises 'hidden manna' to the faithful overcomer -- a symbol of intimate, eschatological sustenance.

Senses
1. sense 1 The miraculous food God provided daily to Israel in the wilderness, used typologically in the NT for divine and eschatological sustenance. In John 6:31, 49 Jesus contrasts perishable wilderness manna with himself as the living bread from heaven. Heb 9:4 mentions the jar of manna preserved in the ark, a tangible memorial of God's faithfulness. Rev 2:17 promises 'hidden manna' to overcomers -- a rich eschatological image of intimate communion. Spanish 'maná,' French 'manne,' and German 'Manna' all transliterate directly from Hebrew, preserving the original wonder of the question: 'What is it?'
