lampstand — a stand for holding lamps, including the temple menorah and metaphorical church-lampstands
Lychnia is the stand upon which a lamp (lychnos) is placed so its light can fill a room. In the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus uses the image proverbially: no one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket rather than on the lychnia (Matt 5:15; Mark 4:21; Luke 8:16; 11:33). Hebrews 9:2 references the golden lampstand of the tabernacle — the seven-branched menorah. In Revelation, the term becomes powerfully symbolic: seven golden lampstands represent seven churches (Rev 1:12-13, 20; 2:1, 5), and the two witnesses are called two lampstands standing before the Lord (Rev 11:4). Spanish 'candelero,' French 'chandelier,' and German 'Leuchter' all preserve the functional sense of a light-elevating stand.
Senses
1. lampstand / candelabrum — A stand or holder designed to elevate a lamp so that it illuminates a room or space, used both literally and symbolically. In the Synoptic sayings, Jesus uses it as a metaphor for visible discipleship — a lamp belongs on the lampstand, not under a basket (Matt 5:15; Mark 4:21; Luke 8:16). Hebrews 9:2 refers to the golden menorah of the tabernacle. In Revelation, seven golden lampstands symbolize the seven churches of Asia (Rev 1:12, 20; 2:1, 5), and two lampstands represent the two prophetic witnesses (Rev 11:4). Spanish 'candelabro/candelero' and French 'chandelier' confirm the artifact's light-bearing function. All 12 occurrences share this core meaning across literal, cultic, and symbolic registers. 12×
