Garden herb or vegetable; cultivated plant used for food, as opposed to wild-growing vegetation.
Lachanon refers to cultivated garden plants -- herbs and vegetables grown intentionally for food, in contrast to wild plants that sprout on their own. Jesus uses the mustard seed parable (Matt 13:32; Mark 4:32) to illustrate how the kingdom of God starts as the smallest of seeds yet grows into something larger than all the lachana. In Luke 11:42 the Pharisees tithe even their garden herbs, while in Rom 14:2 it describes the diet of those who eat only vegetables.
