V-PNA  |  5× in 1 sense
To strike with the fist, buffet, or beat; used both of physical assault and figurative torment.
Describes the specific action of punching or striking with a closed fist—a rougher, more degrading form of violence than a slap. It appears in the Passion narratives where Jesus is beaten by his captors (Matt 26:67; Mark 14:65), and Paul uses it of his own hardships as an apostle (1Cor 4:11). Most strikingly, Paul describes his 'thorn in the flesh' as a messenger of Satan sent to 'buffet' him (2Cor 12:7), extending the physical image into spiritual experience. Peter asks what credit there is in enduring a beating when you have sinned (1Pet 2:20). The Spanish 'dar puñetazos' (give punches) precisely captures the fist-blow sense.

Senses
1. sense 1 To strike with the fist, to buffet or beat, literally or figuratively. The Gospel Passion accounts (Matt 26:67; Mark 14:65) use it of the guards striking Jesus after his trial—the Spanish 'lo-golpearon-con-puños' (they struck him with fists) specifies the bodily violence. Paul extends the image to apostolic suffering in 1Cor 4:11 and, most memorably, to his 'thorn in the flesh' in 2Cor 12:7, where a satanic agent 'buffets' him to keep him humble. 1Pet 2:20 asks about enduring such blows when one has actually done wrong. French 'frapper' and German 'schlagen' generalize to 'strike,' but the Greek root (from κόλαφος, fist) retains the specific image of a closed-fist blow.
