Groups of people reclining for a meal; dining companies or arranged table sections
This noun originally meant a hut or reclining couch, but came to denote groups of people arranged for dining. Luke 9:14 describes Jesus directing the disciples to have the crowds sit down 'in groups' of fifty for the feeding miracle. The French 'groupes' captures the sense clearly. This organized arrangement facilitated both distribution of food and counting of participants, while also creating an orderly community meal rather than a chaotic scramble.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Refers to dining groups or organized companies of people arranged for a meal. The orderly seating in companies of fifty for the feeding of the five thousand reflects both practical meal distribution and symbolic overtones of the messianic banquet, where Jesus provides abundant bread for his people gathered in orderly community. 1×
