καταπᾰτ-έω G2662
To trample underfoot, either literally (crushing by stepping on) or figuratively (treating with contempt or disdain).
Depicts the violent act of stamping or treading something down with the feet. Jesus uses it literally of seed falling on a path and being trampled (Luke 8:5) and of salt thrown out and trodden by people (Matt 5:13), but also figuratively of casting pearls before swine who trample them (Matt 7:6). The most theologically charged use appears in Hebrews 10:29, where rejecting Christ is described as trampling the Son of God underfoot—the Spanish 'pisoteando' and French 'fouler-aux-pieds' vividly preserve this image of contemptuous desecration.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To trample or tread underfoot, literally or metaphorically. The literal sense appears in Luke 8:5 (seed crushed on a path) and Matt 5:13 (worthless salt trodden by passersby). Figuratively, it denotes contemptuous treatment: Matt 7:6 warns against giving holy things to those who will trample them, and Heb 10:29 applies it to apostasy as trampling the Son of God. The German 'zertreten' (crush underfoot) and Spanish 'pisoteando' both emphasize the destructive, degrading force of the action. Luke 12:1 describes the crowd pressing so densely they tread on one another, bridging the literal and figurative. 5×
