Ἰορδάνης G2446
The Jordan; the principal river of Palestine, site of John's baptism and key biblical events.
Iordanēs is the Greek form of Hebrew Yardēn, the river that runs from the Sea of Galilee southward to the Dead Sea. In the NT the Jordan is primarily the setting of John the Baptist's ministry: crowds from Jerusalem and all Judea came out to be baptized in its waters (Matt 3:5–6), and Jesus himself came from Galilee to be baptized there (Matt 3:13). The river also serves as a geographical boundary marker — 'beyond the Jordan' (Matt 4:15, 25; 19:1) designates the Transjordan region. Its OT echoes — Israel's crossing under Joshua, Elijah and Elisha's miracles — lend it deep symbolic resonance as a place of transition and divine encounter.
