Adj-ANS-C  |  2× in 1 sense
less, worse, inferior
The comparative form of an adjective meaning 'inferior' or 'weaker,' this word describes something of lesser value, quality, or degree. Paul uses it twice in Corinthian correspondence. In 1 Corinthians 11:17, he says, 'I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse'—their gatherings harm rather than help. In 2 Corinthians 12:15, Paul asks, 'If I love you more, am I to be loved less?' expressing the painful paradox that his abundant love for the Corinthians seems to elicit reduced affection in return. The word quantifies deterioration or diminishment.

Senses
1. sense 1 The two uses track different types of 'worse': 1 Corinthians 11:17 describes corporate worship that degrades participants (they leave worse than they came due to divisions and abuses of the Lord's Supper), while 2 Corinthians 12:15 laments relational deterioration (increased apostolic love met with decreased congregational warmth). Both capture the sorrow of things moving in the wrong direction—worship that harms and love that's unrequited—showing how Christian community can regress rather than mature.
