ἡδύ-οσμος G2238
mint, an aromatic herb used as seasoning
A fragrant culinary herb, mint was cultivated in Palestinian gardens and, like dill and cumin, subject to the tithe according to Pharisaic interpretation of the law. Jesus rebukes the scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:42 for meticulously tithing 'mint and rue and every herb' while neglecting justice, mercy, and the love of God. He doesn't condemn their mint-tithing per se—'these you ought to have done'—but exposes the distortion of priorities, majoring on minors while ignoring weighty matters. Mint becomes an emblem of misplaced religious scrupulosity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both Gospel references appear in identical contexts: Jesus's 'woe' pronouncements against religious leaders who strain out gnats and swallow camels. The mention of mint tithing (requiring careful herb-counting in the kitchen garden) illustrates how thoroughness in minor legal details can coexist with blindness to the law's central demands. The image is memorable precisely because mint is so insignificant—caring more about herb taxes than human flourishing exposes a profoundly disordered spirituality. 2×
