This noun describes fair or calm weather, the opposite of stormy conditions. In classical Greek it could also metaphorically denote tranquility or peace of mind, but in the New Testament it appears only literally. Jesus uses it in Matthew 16:2 when responding to the Pharisees and Sadducees who could read the weather signs (a red sky bringing fair weather) but failed to discern the signs of the times. The translations uniformly render it as weather-related: English 'fair weather,' Spanish 'buen tiempo,' French 'beau temps.' It represents the calm before—or absence of—the storm.
