ἐπουράνιος G2032
Heavenly, celestial — belonging to or characteristic of heaven, in contrast to what is earthly.
An adjective marking persons, places, or realities as belonging to the heavenly realm rather than the earthly. Paul employs it as a structuring contrast in 1 Corinthians 15:40–49, distinguishing heavenly bodies from earthly ones and the heavenly Adam from the earthly. Ephesians uses the substantivized plural 'the heavenlies' (ἐν τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις) as a distinctive spatial concept — the spiritual realm where believers are seated with Christ yet where cosmic powers also operate (Eph 1:3, 20; 2:6; 3:10; 6:12). Hebrews applies it to the heavenly calling (3:1), the heavenly gift (6:4), and the heavenly sanctuary that the earthly tabernacle merely copies (8:5). Spanish 'celestial' and German 'himmlisch' consistently mirror the single Greek adjective.
Senses
1. heavenly, of heaven, celestial — Pertaining to heaven or the celestial realm, used both attributively and substantively. Paul contrasts heavenly and earthly bodies in resurrection theology (1 Cor 15:40, 48–49). Ephesians develops 'the heavenlies' (τὰ ἐπουράνια) as a multi-layered spiritual domain — the seat of Christ's authority, the believers' position, and the arena of spiritual warfare (Eph 1:3, 20; 2:6; 6:12). Hebrews applies it to the heavenly sanctuary of which the earthly tabernacle was a copy (Heb 8:5; 9:23). Spanish 'celestial' and German 'himmlisch' render it uniformly. 19×
