ἐναγκᾰλ-ίζομαι G1723
to take into one's arms, embrace; a gesture of affection, blessing, or protection
This tender verb appears only in Mark's Gospel, both times describing Jesus taking children into his arms. After teaching about receiving the kingdom like a child, Jesus took a child in his arms to illustrate his point (Mark 9:36). Later, when blessing children brought to him, he took them in his arms and blessed them (Mark 10:16). The action conveys warmth, acceptance, and paternal care. The middle voice emphasizes Jesus' personal, deliberate action in drawing the children close.
Senses
1. sense 1 — To take into one's arms, embrace. Both occurrences show Jesus taking children in his arms: in Mark 9:36 while teaching about humility and receiving the kingdom, and in Mark 10:16 while blessing children brought to him. The middle voice suggests personal, deliberate action. Spanish preserves the participle form ('habiéndolo abrazado'), emphasizing the completed action of taking into arms.
