V-AIA-3P  |  2× in 1 sense
pierce, stab, pierce through
This verb means to pierce or stab through. Both New Testament occurrences refer to Christ's crucifixion: John 19:37 quotes Zechariah 12:10 about looking on the one they pierced, and Revelation 1:7 echoes this prophecy. The word originally meant to prick or put out (as eyes), but developed the stronger sense of piercing through with a weapon. It captures the violence of the crucifixion wound.

Senses
1. sense 1 Describing the act of piercing Christ with a spear, this sense appears in direct and allusive quotations of Zechariah 12:10. John 19:37 applies the prophecy to the soldier's spear thrust, while Revelation 1:7 connects it with Christ's return when all tribes will see the one they pierced. The consistent translations ('pierced', 'traspasaron', 'percer', 'durchstechen') emphasize penetrating violence.
