V-FIA-3S  |  11× in 1 sense
To allow, permit, let — to grant permission or refrain from preventing; to leave alone
The verb ἐάω (eao) means to allow, permit, or let something happen, with an extended shade of leaving someone alone. Jesus would not allow demons to speak (Luke 4:41). At his arrest he says 'Permit even this' (Luke 22:51). The Spirit 'did not permit' Paul to enter Bithynia (Acts 16:7), and God 'allowed all nations to walk in their own ways' in past generations (Acts 14:16). The householder 'would not have allowed' a break-in had he known (Matt 24:43). Spanish 'permitir/dejar' and French 'permettre/laisser' capture the dual permission-and-release quality.

Senses
1. to allow, permit, let To allow, permit, or let something happen, shading into 'leave alone.' Jesus forbids demons from speaking (Luke 4:41), permits his own arrest (Luke 22:51). Extended: sailors leaving anchors in the sea (Acts 27:40). Spanish 'permitir/dejar' and German 'zulassen' confirm a single sense spectrum. 11×
