Diplous means 'double' or 'twofold,' indicating something multiplied by two in quantity, degree, or severity. In the New Testament it carries both literal and intensified moral force. Jesus declares that scribes and Pharisees make a convert 'twice as much a child of Gehenna' as themselves (Matt 23:15) -- a devastating rhetorical doubling. Paul urges that elders who rule well be counted worthy of 'double honor' (1 Tim 5:17). And in Revelation 18:6, Babylon is repaid double for her sins -- Spanish doble, French double, and German doppelt all rendering the retributive multiplication. The word thus spans numerical doubling and intensified moral recompense.
