The noun diktyon is the general term for a fishing net in the New Testament, encompassing both the casting net and the dragnet. It appears almost exclusively in the call narratives and miraculous-catch stories set on the Sea of Galilee. Simon and Andrew were 'casting a net into the sea' when Jesus called them (Matt 4:18; Mark 1:16), and James and John were 'mending their nets' (Matt 4:21; Mark 1:19). Luke 5:2-6 describes nets washed and then filled to breaking in the miraculous catch, while John 21:6-11 narrates the post-resurrection catch where the net held 153 large fish without tearing. The net thus becomes a symbol of the apostolic mission — 'fishers of men.' Spanish 'red' and French 'filet' both denote this fundamental tool of the Galilean economy.
