δηνάριον G1220
denarius — a Roman silver coin worth approximately one day's wages for a common laborer
The denarion was the standard Roman silver coin circulating throughout the provinces during the New Testament era, equivalent to roughly one day's pay for a hired worker. Jesus uses this coin with devastating effect in his teaching: the parable of the laborers each receiving one denarius regardless of hours worked (Matt 20:2-13), the unforgiving servant who chokes a fellow slave over a debt of one hundred denarii (Matt 18:28), and the famous 'render unto Caesar' episode where he asks whose image is stamped on the coin (Matt 22:19-21). The feeding of the five thousand prompts the disciples to estimate that two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread (Mark 6:37; John 6:7). Spanish 'denario,' French 'denier,' and German 'Denar' all transliterate the Latin original.
Senses
1. denarius (Roman silver coin) — A Roman silver coin (Latin denarius), widely used as both currency and a unit of economic value throughout Palestine under Roman rule. Functions in NT narratives as a concrete measure of daily wages (Matt 20:2), debts (Matt 18:28; Luke 7:41), charitable expenditure (Mark 14:5; John 12:5), and the cost of provisions (Mark 6:37; John 6:7). The coin's imperial portrait also provides the occasion for Jesus' pronouncement on obligations to Caesar and God (Matt 22:19-21; Mark 12:15; Luke 20:24). 16×
