Aparece en contextos tanto de violencia informal como de castigo judicial formal. En las parábolas de Jesús, los labradores de la viña golpean a los siervos del dueño (Mt 21:35; Mr 12:3, 5), y un siervo negligente recibe muchos azotes (Lc 12:47-48). En los relatos apostólicos, Pablo y los discípulos son azotados ante concilios y en sinagogas (Mr 13:9; Hch 5:40; 16:37; 22:19).
