V-PPA-NMP  |  15× in 1 sense
To beat, strike, or flog; to inflict blows upon someone, whether in violence or judicial punishment.
Derō originally meant 'to skin' or 'to flay' in classical Greek, but by the NT period it had settled into the sense of beating or flogging. It appears in contexts of both informal violence and formal judicial punishment. In Jesus' parables, vineyard tenants beat the owner's servants (Matt 21:35; Mark 12:3, 5), and a negligent servant receives many blows (Luke 12:47–48). In the apostolic narratives, Paul and the disciples are beaten before councils and in synagogues (Mark 13:9; Acts 5:40; 16:37; 22:19). The Spanish 'azotar/golpear,' French 'battre,' and German 'schlagen' all capture the physicality of violent striking.

Senses
1. beat, strike, flog To inflict blows upon someone by beating or flogging, used of both informal violence and official judicial punishment. In the parables, servants sent to a vineyard are beaten by wicked tenants (Matt 21:35; Mark 12:3, 5). In Acts, apostles are flogged by authorities (Acts 5:40; 16:37). Jesus warns his followers to expect such treatment in synagogues and before councils (Mark 13:9). The multilingual evidence (Spanish 'azotar,' French 'battre,' German 'schlagen') uniformly reflects physical striking. 15×
