Thunder — the sound accompanying storms; a theophanic sign of divine power and majesty
The noun brontē refers to thunder as both a natural meteorological phenomenon and a theophanic manifestation of divine power. Jesus surnamed James and John 'Boanerges, sons of thunder' (Mark 3:17), perhaps alluding to their fiery temperament. In Revelation, thunder becomes a recurring element of heavenly liturgy and judgment: it issues from God's throne (Rev 4:5; 8:5; 11:19; 16:18), accompanies the opening of seals (Rev 6:1), and announces angelic proclamations (Rev 10:3-4; 14:2; 19:6). In John 12:29, the crowd mistakes the Father's voice for thunder. Spanish 'trueno' and French 'tonnerre' both derive from Latin tonitrus, preserving the numinous resonance.
Senses
1. thunder — Thunder as a theophanic manifestation of divine power and heavenly majesty. Dominates the Apocalypse, where it proceeds from the throne of God (Rev 4:5; 8:5; 11:19; 16:18), accompanies the Lamb's seal-openings (Rev 6:1), and lends cosmic weight to angelic proclamations (Rev 10:3-4; 14:2; 19:6). In John 12:29 the Father's voice from heaven is mistaken for thunder by the crowd. Spanish 'trueno' and German 'Donner' carry the same numinous overtone. 12×
