βάθος G0899
Depth or deep place, whether physical (sea, earth) or metaphorical (of divine wisdom, riches, or spiritual reality).
The noun βάθος covers both literal and figurative depth. In the parables of the sower, seed falls on rocky ground with no 'depth' of earth (Matt 13:5; Mark 4:5). Jesus instructs Simon to put out into the 'deep' for a catch (Luke 5:4). But Paul elevates the word to theological heights: neither height nor 'depth' can separate us from God's love (Rom 8:39), and he exclaims over the 'depth' of the riches of God's wisdom (Rom 11:33). Revelation speaks of the 'deep things' of Satan (Rev 2:24). Spanish 'profundidad' and French 'profondeur' span both physical and metaphorical registers naturally.
Senses
1. depth, deep place — Depth or deep place, used of physical depth (shallow soil in Matt 13:5, Mark 4:5; the deep water in Luke 5:4) and metaphorical depth (the unfathomable riches of God's wisdom in Rom 11:33; the cosmic dimension that cannot separate from divine love in Rom 8:39). In Ephesians 3:18, Paul prays that believers may grasp the breadth, length, height, and 'depth' of Christ's love. Spanish 'profundidad/profundo' and German 'Tiefe' both naturally encompass the physical-to-theological range of this word. 8×
