ἄφαντ-ος G0855
invisible, disappeared, vanished from sight; suddenly absent or hidden
This adjective means 'made invisible' or 'disappeared,' describing what has vanished from view. Luke uses it at the Emmaus supper when Jesus 'became invisible' (ἄφαντος ἐγένετο) to the two disciples after breaking bread. Their eyes were opened to recognize Him, and in that instant He vanished—a sudden, supernatural withdrawal from sight. Classical usage includes soldiers missing after battle and heroes disappearing into legend. Luke's deployment is theologically loaded: the risen Christ is no mere revenant but Lord of matter and visibility, appearing and disappearing at will.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The translations (English/Spanish 'invisible,' French 'disparu,' German retaining the Greek) reflect sudden disappearance. At Luke 24:31, Jesus becomes ἄφαντος after the disciples' eyes were opened—He vanishes the moment recognition dawns, leaving them alone with burning hearts and the imperative to testify to the resurrection. 1×
