αὐλ-ητής G0834
flute-player, one who plays the aulos (reed instrument)
A noun denoting someone who plays the aulos, a double-reed wind instrument similar to an oboe. Jesus encounters flute-players at Jairus's house performing customary mourning music (Matthew 9:23). Revelation's lament over Babylon includes the silencing of flute-players among other musicians (Revelation 18:22). Flute-players were common at funerals and festivals in the ancient world. The Greek term could also refer to certain wasps or sanitary engineers in specialized texts.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Both New Testament references place flute-players in contexts of public events: funeral mourning (Matt 9:23) and the cessation of city life (Rev 18:22). Matthew specifically notes the noise and crowd accompanying the professional mourners with their flutes. Revelation's prophecy of silenced musicians symbolizes complete desolation. All language witnesses use flute-player terminology, recognizing this as a professional class of musicians rather than casual performers. 2×
