ἄργῠρος G0696
Silver, as a precious metal or material; used for coins, idols, and building materials in the NT.
This noun denotes silver as a physical substance rather than as currency (for which Greek more commonly uses argyrion). Jesus instructs the disciples to take no gold, silver, or copper in their belts (Matt 10:9), where silver sits in a triad of monetary metals. Paul argues that the divine nature is not like gold, silver, or stone shaped by human craft (Acts 17:29). In 1 Cor 3:12 silver appears among building materials tested by fire. James warns the rich that their silver has corroded (Jas 5:3), and Revelation lists silver among Babylon's luxury cargo (Rev 18:12). French 'argent' and Spanish 'plata' preserve the same metal-to-money semantic bridge found in the Greek.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Silver as a precious metal, appearing in the NT in lists of valuable materials and substances. Matt 10:9 places it alongside gold and copper as monetary metals the disciples should not carry. Acts 17:29 uses it in Paul's Areopagus argument against idolatry -- the divine is not like gold, silver, or stone. 1 Cor 3:12 includes silver among materials that will be tested by fire on judgment day. Jas 5:3 warns that hoarded silver has corroded, serving as evidence against the rich. Rev 18:12 catalogs it among Babylon's traded luxuries. The multilingual glosses (French 'argent,' Spanish 'plata') show how European languages inherited silver-as-money from this same semantic root. 5×
