Silver as metal or coinage; money in general, whether literal coins or figurative wealth
The diminutive form of argyros ('silver'), used in the New Testament for both the metal and the currency made from it. Judas received thirty pieces of silver (argyrion) for betraying Jesus (Matt 26:15; 27:3, 5, 6, 9), and the parable of the talents features silver entrusted to servants (Matt 25:18, 27). Peter declares he has neither silver nor gold (Acts 3:6), and Paul renounces coveting anyone's silver (Acts 20:33). First Peter 1:18 contrasts perishable silver with the imperishable blood of Christ. Spanish 'plata' covers both metal and money, mirroring the Greek word's dual range.
Senses
1. silver, silver coin, money — Silver as a precious metal and, by extension, silver coins or money in general. In the betrayal narrative, Judas receives and returns thirty argyrion (Matt 26:15; 27:3, 5, 9). The parable of the talents uses the word for entrusted capital (Matt 25:18, 27). Peter and Paul disclaim silver as worldly wealth (Acts 3:6; 20:33), and 1 Peter 1:18 contrasts corruptible silver with Christ's blood. Spanish 'plata' and French 'argent' each mirror the Greek dual sense of substance and currency. 20×
