once — a single time; once for all, decisively and unrepeatable
Hapax is a compact adverb with outsized theological weight. In ordinary usage it simply means 'one time' — Paul was shipwrecked, the Philippians sent aid 'once and again' (Phil 4:16). But in Hebrews it becomes a term of art for the unrepeatable finality of Christ's sacrifice: the high priest entered the Most Holy Place 'once a year' (Heb 9:7), but Christ entered 'once for all' (Heb 9:12, 10:10), rendering further offerings unnecessary. Jude 3 uses it for the faith 'once for all delivered to the saints.' The translations converge simply: Spanish 'una vez,' French 'une fois,' German 'einmal' — but the theological density of those two syllables in Hebrews far exceeds their surface simplicity.

Senses
1. once An adverb indicating a single occurrence, carrying two registers in the NT: (a) the simple numerical sense of 'one time' in narrative and epistolary contexts (2 Cor 11:25, Phil 4:16, 1 Thess 2:18), and (b) the theologically loaded 'once for all' in Hebrews and Jude, emphasizing the decisive, unrepeatable character of Christ's atoning work (Heb 9:7, 9:26-28, 10:2) and the apostolic deposit of faith (Jude 3). The single Greek form carries both registers, with context determining whether finality or mere singularity is in view. 14×
