ἄνυδρ-ος G0504
waterless, dry, arid; lacking water, used of desolate places and metaphorically of spiritually barren agents
Formed from the privative alpha and hydor ('water'), this adjective describes what is without water. Jesus speaks of an unclean spirit wandering through 'waterless places' seeking rest (Matt 12:43; Luke 11:24) — the desert as the haunt of demons. In 2 Peter 2:17 and Jude 1:12, the word is applied metaphorically to false teachers: they are 'waterless springs' or 'waterless clouds,' promising refreshment but delivering nothing. German 'wasserlose' and Spanish 'sin-agua' both transparently preserve the privative construction.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Waterless, arid — describing a literal dry region. In Jesus' parable of the unclean spirit (Matt 12:43; Luke 11:24), the expelled demon traverses 'waterless places,' evoking the ancient Near Eastern association of desert wastelands with spiritual desolation and demonic habitation. Spanish 'sin-agua' and German 'wasserlose' directly calque the Greek privative form. 4×
