unholy, profane, impious; lacking in reverence or violating sacred boundaries
This adjective describes what is unholy or profane, lacking proper reverence for sacred things. Both occurrences appear in the Pastoral Epistles describing types of people. In 1 Timothy 1:9, law exists for the unholy and profane among other categories of sinners. In 2 Timothy 3:2, Paul predicts that in the last days people will be unholy among other vices. Classical usage described corpses denied proper rites, profaned holy things, or unholy deeds. The New Testament applies it to moral-religious character. Translations (Spanish impíos/profanos, French ἀνοσίοις, German unheilig) emphasize violation of holiness.
