ἀμετά-θετος G0276
Adj-ANS  |  2× in 1 sense
unchangeable, unalterable, immutable
This adjective describes what cannot be changed or altered. Both occurrences appear in Hebrews 6 regarding God's promise to Abraham. Verse 17 states that God, desiring to show the heirs of promise the ἀμετάθετον τῆς βουλῆς αὐτοῦ—unchangeable character of his purpose—guaranteed it with an oath. Verse 18 speaks of two ἀμετάθετα πράγματα—unchangeable things—in which it is impossible for God to lie. The author builds assurance on God's immutability: his purposes and promises cannot change, providing unshakeable hope for believers.

Senses
1. sense 1 The immutability theme is consistent: Spanish 'inmutable/inmutables,' French 'immuable,' German 'unveränderlich' (unchangeable). Both verses occur within a single argument about the certainty of God's promise. The classical philosophical background of immutable knowledge and fate is here applied to the reliability of divine commitment—God's character ensures his promises cannot be revoked.
