Deceitfulness, treachery; the quality of deception especially in false prophecy and faithless hearts
Tarmith denotes a deep-seated deceitfulness—the treachery that lodges in the human heart and on the tongue. Jeremiah uses it to diagnose Israel's spiritual sickness: the people cling to 'perpetual deceit' (8:5) and false prophets speak from 'the deceit of their own heart' (14:14; 23:26). The psalmist in 119:118 dismisses those whose falsehood (sheqer) is itself deceitful (tarmith). Zephaniah 3:13 envisions a purified remnant whose tongue harbors no deceit.

Senses
1. sense 1 Deceitfulness, treachery—a quality of persistent falsehood rooted in the heart or tongue. Appears exclusively in prophetic and wisdom contexts: paired with sheqer ('falsehood') in Ps 119:118 and Jer 23:26, with kazav ('lie') and 'awlah ('injustice') in Zeph 3:13, and describing incorrigible apostasy in Jer 8:5. Spanish 'engaño' and English 'deceit' align closely, while the French rendering 'Tubal' for one occurrence appears to be a textual anomaly, underscoring how this rare noun can confound translators.
