Jeremiah uses it to diagnose Israel's spiritual sickness: the people cling to 'perpetual deceit' (8:5) and false prophets speak from 'the deceit of their own heart' (14:14; 23:26). The psalmist in 119:118 dismisses those whose falsehood (sheqer) is itself deceitful (tarmith). Zephaniah 3:13 envisions a purified remnant whose tongue harbors no deceit.
