Terah — Abraham's father and patriarch of the migration from Ur to Haran; also a wilderness camp on the Exodus route.
Primarily the name of Abraham's father, the son of Nahor, who initiated the family's departure from Ur of the Chaldeans toward Canaan but settled in Haran, where he died at 205 years (Gen 11:24-32). Joshua 24:2 remembers him as one who served other gods beyond the Euphrates — a striking note of idolatry in the patriarchal lineage. The genealogical thread runs through 1 Chronicles 1:26. A second, less prominent Terah is an Israelite encampment during the wilderness wanderings (Num 33:27-28). The etymology may connect to an Akkadian word for ibex or a divine name. German 'Terach' and Spanish 'Téraj' both reflect the same proper name.
