Toi (Tou) — king of Hamath who sent tribute to David after the defeat of Hadadezer
Toi (also written Tou in Chronicles) was the king of Hamath, an Aramaean city-state on the Orontes River. When David defeated Hadadezer of Zobah, Toi sent his son Joram with vessels of gold, silver, and bronze to congratulate David, since Hadadezer had been Toi's enemy as well (2 Sam 8:9-10). The Chronicles parallel (1 Chr 18:9-10) spells the name Tou. The variation likely reflects dialectal differences in transmission rather than two different individuals.
