Supplication, plea for mercy; also the gracious favor or mercy that is sought
Derived from the root chanan ('to be gracious'), this noun denotes both the act of pleading for mercy and the gracious favor being sought. Solomon's Temple dedication prayer uses it repeatedly alongside tefillah ('prayer'), entreating God to hear 'the prayer and the supplication' of his people (1 Kgs 8:28, 30, 38, 45, 49, 52). Jeremiah uses the vivid phrase 'let my supplication fall before you' (Jer 37:20; 42:2). In two passages, however, the word denotes the favor itself rather than the request: Joshua's enemies received no grace (Josh 11:20), and the post-exilic community received a moment of grace from the Lord (Ezra 9:8). French grace and German Gnade in these passages confirm the shift from petition to disposition.
1. supplication, plea for mercy A humble, earnest plea or entreaty directed to God or a human superior, seeking compassionate favor or relief. The dominant sense across 23 occurrences, frequently paired with tefillah ('prayer') in Solomon's dedication (1 Kgs 8:28, 30, 38, 45, 49, 52; 2 Chr 6:19, 29, 35, 39). Also in Jeremiah's urgent phrase 'let my supplication fall before you' (Jer 37:20; 42:2). Spanish suplica/mi-suplica and the psalmic usage (Ps 6:10; 55:2; 119:170) consistently render the petitionary sense. 23×

2. grace, favor, mercy The quality of grace, favor, or mercy itself -- the disposition being sought rather than the act of seeking it. In Josh 11:20, God hardened the Canaanites' hearts so that 'there would be no grace' shown to them (no quarter given). In Ezra 9:8, the remnant acknowledges a brief moment of 'grace from the Lord.' French grace and German Gnade in these two passages confirm the shift from 'supplication' (the request) to 'favor' (the thing requested), a metonymic extension natural in the Hebrew chanan word-family.
