Tiglath-pileser III, king of Assyria (745-727 BCE), conqueror of northern Israel and Levantine vassal states
The name תִּגְלַת פִּלְאֶסֶר (Tiglath-pileser) refers to the Neo-Assyrian emperor Tukulti-apil-Esharra III, whose name means 'my trust is in the son of Esharra.' Two orthographic traditions coexist in the Hebrew Bible: the Kings spelling תִּגְלַת פִּלְאֶסֶר (2 Kgs 15:29; 16:7, 10) and the Chronicles variant תִּלְּגַת פִּלְנְאֶסֶר (1 Chr 5:6, 26; 2 Chr 28:20). He deported the Transjordanian tribes and conquered Galilee, making Judah's Ahaz his tributary. Arabic renders both forms (تِغْلَثَ فِلَاسَرَ / تِلكَت فِلنَاسِر), while Spanish, Korean, and Hindi all transliterate consistently.
Senses
1. Tiglath-pileser (Assyrian king) — The Assyrian emperor Tiglath-pileser III (reigned 745-727 BCE), who initiated the deportation policy that would culminate in the fall of Samaria. He conquered Naphtali and Gilead, deporting their populations to Assyria (2 Kgs 15:29), and received Ahaz's tribute and appeal for military aid against the Syro-Ephraimite coalition (2 Kgs 16:7-10). The Chronicler adds that he 'distressed' Ahaz rather than helped him (2 Chr 28:20-21). All eleven occurrences refer to this single historical figure across two spelling traditions. 11×
