Tabor — Mount Tabor in the Jezreel Valley, a Levitical city, and a landmark oak near Bethel
Tabor primarily designates the prominent, dome-shaped mountain rising from the northeastern edge of the Jezreel Valley in lower Galilee, a landmark visible from great distances. It features most memorably in Judges 4:6-14, where Deborah commanded Barak to muster ten thousand men on Mount Tabor before the decisive victory over Sisera's chariots. Hosea 5:1 denounces it as a snare, possibly alluding to illicit worship there, and Jeremiah 46:18 compares an invading king to Tabor among the mountains. The Psalmist celebrates Tabor alongside Hermon as mountains that rejoice in God's name (Ps 89:12). The name also applies to a Levitical city and an oak near Bethel in Benjamin's territory.
Senses
1. Tabor (place name) — The proper noun Tabor, chiefly denoting Mount Tabor (modern Jebel et-Tur), the iconic isolated mountain at the northeastern corner of the Jezreel Valley where Barak assembled his forces against Sisera (Judg 4:6, 12, 14). It also appears in prophetic and poetic texts as a symbol of grandeur (Jer 46:18; Ps 89:12) and as a site of spiritual warning (Hos 5:1). Additionally, the name identifies a Levitical city in Zebulun (1 Chr 6:62) and an oak or place in Benjamin near Bethel (1 Sam 10:3). The tribal boundary lists in Joshua 19:22, 34 mark Tabor as a territorial reference point. 10×
