Shemer; a personal name, notably the original owner of the hill on which Samaria was built
Shemer is best known as the man from whom King Omri purchased the hill that became Samaria, Israel's northern capital (1 Kgs 16:24). The city name שֹׁמְרוֹן explicitly derives from this purchase. Beyond this historically pivotal figure, the name appears in Levitical and tribal genealogies: a Levite in 1 Chronicles 6:46, a member of Asher (1 Chr 7:34, variant Shomer in v. 32), and possibly a Benjaminite (1 Chr 8:12). The LXX renders it Σεμμηρ or Σωμηρ.

Senses
1. sense 1 A proper masculine name meaning perhaps 'guardian' or 'watchman,' related to the root שׁמר. The most significant bearer sold the hill to Omri that became Samaria (1 Kgs 16:24, mentioned twice). Additional bearers include a Levite (1 Chr 6:46) and an Asherite (1 Chr 7:34). Spanish 'Semer/Shemer' and French 'Shemer' follow the standard transliteration. The name's connection to Israel's capital gives it outsized historical weight.
