Engordar, prosperar; en Hifil, hacer engordar o embotar, volver insensible
Este verbo abarca las dimensiones fisica y metaforica de la gordura en el pensamiento hebreo. En el Qal, describe a Israel engordando y volviendose rebelde bajo la bendicion divina (Dt 32:15), o a los malvados creciendo lustrosos y satisfechos (Jer 5:28). El Hifil porta un sentido causativo: en Nehemias 9:25 el pueblo 'se engordo' por la abundancia, mientras que en Isaias 6:10 Dios ordena al profeta 'engordar' -- es decir, volver torpe e insensible -- el corazon del pueblo. El castellano 'engordarse' preserva bien la imagen concreta detras de la metafora teologica.

1. Engordar, prosperar — Engordar, volverse prospero y complaciente: se aplica a Israel bajo la bendicion divina cuando cae en la arrogancia. Deuteronomio 32:15 combina el perfecto e imperfecto Qal para retratar a Jesurun engordando como una bestia y luego coceando contra Dios. Jeremias 5:28 extiende la imagen a los malvados que se vuelven lustrosos. En el Hifil, Isaias 6:10 emplea la misma raiz con sentido causativo: hacer insensible el corazon del pueblo. 5×
