Shechem — the ancient Canaanite city (modern Nablus) between Gerizim and Ebal, and the personal name of Hamor's son.
One of the most historically layered place names in Scripture. Shechem (modern Nablus) sits in the pass between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal in the central hill country — the first place where Abram built an altar upon entering Canaan (Gen 12:6). It became a city of refuge (Josh 20:7), the site of Joshua's covenant renewal (Josh 24:1), and the volatile setting for Abimelech's kingship and destruction (Judges 9). Spanish renders it "Siquem" or "Shekem," French "Sichem," and German "Sichem" — all reflecting the ancient pronunciation through different phonological filters. The same name belongs to the son of Hamor the Hivite, the local prince whose assault on Dinah triggered the bloody reprisal by Simeon and Levi (Gen 34).

Senses
1. Shechem (city) The ancient Canaanite city of Shechem, situated between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal in Ephraim's hill country, modern Nablus. A site of tremendous theological weight: Abram's first altar in Canaan (Gen 12:6), Jacob's purchase of land (Gen 33:18-19), Joshua's covenant ceremony (Josh 24:1), and Abimelech's turbulent reign (Judg 9). With 62 occurrences, it is one of the most frequently named cities in the Hebrew Bible. Spanish "Siquem," French "Sichem," and German "Sichem" all preserve the ancient sibilant opening. 62×

2. Shechem (person) The personal name Shechem, borne by the son of Hamor the Hivite, a prince in the region of the city who assaulted Dinah and was subsequently killed by her brothers Simeon and Levi (Gen 34:2-26). Appears once in a context where Shechem the person is distinguished from Shechem the city — at Gen 34:20, where Spanish adds the conjunction "y-Shejem" and German "und-Sichem," both flagging the name as a coordinate personal reference rather than a toponym.
