Shishak, the Egyptian pharaoh (Shoshenq I) who invaded Judah during the reign of Rehoboam.
The proper noun Shishak, the Hebrew rendering of Egyptian Shoshenq I, founder of the 22nd Dynasty. He first appears as the pharaoh who sheltered Jeroboam when he fled from Solomon (1 Kgs 11:40), then dramatically as the invader who attacked Jerusalem in Rehoboam's fifth year, carrying off the treasures of the temple and royal palace (1 Kgs 14:25; 2 Chr 12:2-9). His military campaign is independently attested by his victory relief at the temple of Karnak. Spanish 'Sisac,' French and German 'Schischak/Shishak' all represent conventional transliterations of the Hebrew.
Senses
1. Shishak (Egyptian pharaoh) — The Egyptian pharaoh Shoshenq I (ca. 943-922 BC), rendered in Hebrew as Shishak. All eight occurrences refer to this single historical figure across two narrative contexts: his harboring of the fugitive Jeroboam during Solomon's reign (1 Kgs 11:40), and his invasion of Judah under Rehoboam, when he plundered the temple and palace treasures (1 Kgs 14:25; 2 Chr 12:2, 5, 7, 9). The ketiv/qere variation (shushak/shishak) in 1 Kgs 14:25 reflects minor orthographic uncertainty. Spanish 'Sisac,' French 'Schischak,' and German 'Schischak' are conventional transliterations across Bible translation traditions. 8×
