A ringing cry -- either joyful singing and shouts of praise, or an urgent outcry of supplication and lament.
A word whose emotional range stretches from exuberant praise to desperate prayer. When paired with simchah (joy) or todah (thanksgiving), rinnah erupts as triumphant singing -- the redeemed returning to Zion with 'everlasting joy' (Isa 35:10; 51:11), or the 'voice of rejoicing' in the tents of the righteous (Ps 118:15). Yet the same word appears in solemn contexts of entreaty, where it is paired with tefillah (prayer) as a plea for God's attention (1 Kgs 8:28; Ps 17:1; 88:2). Spanish captures the split neatly: 'canto de alegría' for joy, 'clamor' for supplication.

Senses
1. joyful singing or shouting A ringing cry of joy, glad singing, or jubilant shouting, especially in worship and celebration of God's saving acts. German 'Jubel,' Spanish 'canto de alegría,' and French 'cri de joie' all converge on exuberant praise. Paired with thanksgiving (todah) in Ps 107:22 and with salvation (yeshuah) in Ps 118:15. Isaiah deploys it for cosmic celebration when Israel is redeemed (Isa 35:10; 44:23; 49:13; 54:1). 21×

2. cry of supplication or distress A loud outcry of supplication, lament, or urgent entreaty directed to God. Consistently paired with tefillah (prayer) as a formal liturgical pair in Solomon's temple dedication (1 Kgs 8:28; 2 Chr 6:19) and in the Psalms of petition (Ps 17:1; 61:1; 88:2; 119:169; 142:6). Spanish 'clamor,' Arabic surakh, and Korean bureujieum all mark the anguished, pleading quality. Jeremiah 7:16 and 14:12 show God refusing to hear this kind of rinnah. 12×
