Reubenite — a member or descendant of the tribe of Reuben, Israel's firstborn son
This gentilic adjective identifies persons belonging to the tribe of Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. The Reubenites received their territorial allotment east of the Jordan in the Transjordan tableland (Deut 3:12, 16; Josh 13:8). They appear regularly alongside the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh as the three Transjordanian tribes who crossed the Jordan armed to help conquer Canaan (Josh 1:12; 22:1). Reubenite territory later fell to Moabite and Assyrian encroachment (2 Kgs 10:33; 1 Chr 5:26). The term occurs with the article as a collective noun or without it for individuals (1 Chr 11:42).
Senses
1. Reubenite (gentilic) — A gentilic designating members of the tribe of Reuben, used both of individuals (1 Chr 11:42) and collectively with the article for the entire clan. The Reubenites settled east of the Jordan (Deut 3:12; Josh 13:8), frequently mentioned together with the Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh. Their territory was exposed to foreign incursion: Hazael's raids (2 Kgs 10:33) and eventual Assyrian exile under Tiglath-pileser (1 Chr 5:26). 18×
