Kanah, name of a stream and a town in Canaan
Kanah designates both a wadi (seasonal stream) marking the boundary between Ephraim and Manasseh, and a separate town in the territory of Asher. The stream, identified with modern Wady Kânah southwest of Nablus, appears in the tribal boundary descriptions of Joshua. The town in Asher, probably modern Qâna southeast of Tyre, represents a different geographical location sharing the same name, which may derive from a root meaning 'reed' or 'cane.'
Senses
1. sense 1 — This place name refers to two distinct geographical features: the Kanah brook (naḥal Kanah) that served as a tribal boundary between Ephraim and Manasseh in central Canaan, and a town allocated to Asher in the north near Tyre. Both locations likely derived their names from reeds or canes growing in the area, a common basis for ancient toponyms in water-rich regions. 3×
