Kir-Hareseth, a fortified Moabite city (modern Kerak, Jordan); also called Kir-Heres.
Kir-Hareseth (also written Kir-Heres) was a major fortified city of Moab, widely identified with modern al-Karak in Jordan. The compound name combines qir ('wall') with chareseth or cheres ('potsherd' or 'earthenware'), possibly describing its walls or pottery industry. It appears in the account of Joram's campaign against Moab (2 Kgs 3:25) and prominently in prophetic oracles against Moab in Isaiah 16:7, 11 and Jeremiah 48:31, 36, where its fall elicits mourning. The multilingual glosses preserve the toponym with minor transliteration variants.

Senses
1. Kir-Hareseth (place name) The proper noun Kir-Hareseth (also Kir-Heres), designating a major fortified Moabite city, probably modern al-Karak in Jordan. The name combines qir ('wall') with chareseth ('earthenware/potsherd'). It appears in the narrative of the Moabite campaign (2 Kgs 3:25) and in prophetic oracles of doom over Moab (Isa 16:7, 11; Jer 48:31, 36), where its destruction occasions lamentation. Spanish 'Kir/Hareset,' French 'Kir-Hérès,' and English 'Kir-Hareseth' all preserve the place name with minor phonetic variation.
