Cain — firstborn son of Adam and Eve, the first murderer in the biblical narrative
The proper name of the eldest son of Adam and Eve, whose offering God rejected while accepting Abel's, precipitating the first murder (Gen 4:1-8). Genesis explains the name through a wordplay on qanah ('to acquire'), as Eve declares 'I have acquired a man with the Lord' (Gen 4:1). After slaying Abel, Cain receives a protective mark and goes out to dwell in the land of Nod, east of Eden, where he founds a city (Gen 4:15-17). All sixteen occurrences fall within the Yahwist narrative of Genesis 4. Spanish 'Cain,' French 'Cain,' and German 'Kain' all preserve the Hebrew pronunciation closely.

Senses
1. Qayin Cain (קַיִן), the personal name of Adam and Eve's firstborn son, whose story in Genesis 4 encompasses the first worship, the first fratricide, and the first exile. The name is etymologically linked to qanah ('acquire/create') through Eve's birth announcement (Gen 4:1). All occurrences belong to the J source in Genesis 4:1-25, tracing his offering, his murder of Abel, his dialogue with God, his protective mark, and his settlement east of Eden where he builds the first city. 16×
