loathe, feel disgust; contend with, struggle against
1. loathe, feel disgust To feel deep revulsion, loathing, or self-abhorrence. In Qal: Ps 95:10 'I loathed that generation' (aqut be-dor, rendered Arabic taqazzaztu تَقَزَّزْتُ = I was disgusted, Korean bun-nohayeotdoda 분노하였도다 = I was indignant, Spanish senti fastidio). In Niphal reflexive: Ezek 6:9 'they shall loathe themselves' for their abominations, Ezek 20:43 and 36:31 similarly -- Arabic taqsha'irrun تَقْشَعِرُّون = to shudder, Hindi ghrina karoge घृणा करोगे = you will detest, Spanish os aborreceréis/avergonzaréis. 2. contend with, struggle against Hitpael form expressing active contention, quarreling, or striving against someone, a semantic extension from the base meaning of loathing into hostile engagement. In Ps 119:158 'I am disgusted' with the faithless (va-etqotatah, Arabic ishma'zaztu اشْمَأَزَزْتُ = I was revolted, German angewidert = disgusted, Spanish me disguste). In Ps 139:21 'I contend/strive' with God's enemies (etqotat, Arabic atakhasamu أَتَخَاصَمُ = I quarrel, Korean datunaidah 다투나이다 = I contend, Spanish contiendo = I contend, Hindi larta hun लड़ता हूँ = I fight). The Hitpael distinctively shifts from internal revulsion toward external confrontation.
