El adjetivo קַדְמֹנִי se divide entre dos polos semánticos: 'oriental' en contextos geográficos y 'anterior/antiguo' en los temporales, ambos derivados de la raíz קדם, cuya noción básica es 'frente' o 'delante'. Dado que la orientación israelita situaba el este como la dirección hacia la que uno mira, 'delante de' produjo tanto 'hacia el oriente' como 'anterior en el tiempo'. Ezequiel usa el término para la puerta oriental del templo (Ez 10:19; 11:1) y el mar oriental, es decir, el Mar Muerto (Ez 47:18). En el plano temporal, Isaías 43:18 insta a Israel a no recordar las 'cosas anteriores', y Malaquías 3:4 evoca los 'años antiguos'.
