Zarephath; coastal Phoenician town between Sidon and Tyre, where Elijah stayed with a widow
Zarephath was a Phoenician coastal city south of Sidon where Elijah found refuge during the drought. First Kings 17:9-10 describes God directing Elijah to go to Zarephath, where a widow would sustain him—leading to the miracles of unending oil and the widow's son raised from death. Obadiah 20 prophesies that exiles of Israel will possess Phoenician territory 'as far as Zarephath.' The site is identified with modern Sarafand in Lebanon. The town became emblematic of God's care extending beyond Israel's borders, as Jesus later recalled in Luke 4:26.
